5 Breathing Techniques to Try Before Your Next Yoga Class
Breathing is the foundation of any yoga practice, yet most beginners overlook it. Taking a few minutes to practice proper pranayama before stepping onto the mat can dramatically improve your focus and performance. For Melbourne and Sydney students attending early morning classes, these simple breathing exercises can energise the body while calming the mind.
The first technique is Ujjayi, often called victory breath. Inhale gently through the nose while slightly constricting the back of the throat, creating a soft oceanic sound. Exhale through the nose as well, maintaining a consistent rhythm. This breath is ideal for long holds and hot yoga classes as it regulates internal heat and keeps the mind anchored.
Second is Nadi Shodhana, or alternate nostril breathing. Using the right thumb and ring finger, close one nostril at a time, inhaling through one side and exhaling through the other. Practise for five minutes to equalise energy channels and clear mental fog. This technique is especially helpful before a challenge or a difficult balance posture.
Third is Kapalabhati, or skull shining breath, which involves short, powerful exhales and passive inhales. This percussion-like breath is a fantastic warm-up because it warms the core and stimulates the abdominal organs. However, avoid if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure. Aim for three rounds of 20 breaths.
Fourth is 4-7-8 breathing, popularising for sleep and stress relief. Inhale through the nose for four counts, hold the breath for seven counts, then exhale slowly for eight counts through the mouth. Practise this once you have entered savasana to release residual tension. Lastly, Bhramari breathing involves inhaling and then humming like a bee on the exhale. This sound vibration calms the busy mind and helps create a meditative state as you prepare for class.
